LAND IN TRANSITION

See how our farm has changed over time. We bought this land as a cattle ranch and turned it into an organic fruit and vegetable farm with forest and wood groves intermixed.

This is near the North-East corner of our property where we decided to put our main gate for the farm.
Notice how the volcano in the background slowly disappears.

This is how the farm looked when we bought it. The land was cleared for grazing with only a few trees.
2001

The second year we did not clear the land. We let established trees fill out, trees that were cut each year grew back and we planted lots of new ones as well.
2002

The greenery is starting to fill in and trees are growing up taller than bushes.
2003

No longer a cattle ranch. Our farm is taking shape.
2004

Our farm is now established and the gate is the landmark for our farm.

Entering the farm you are greeted by lots of flowers and various fruit and wood trees scattered around the entry.

From inside the farm looking out to the road.

The rate of growth is amazing, in just 2 years our hillside has gone from barren to a lush forest of fruit and wood trees.

We built an open air cooking/laundry shed our first year. We came back after the rainy season to find it landscaped beautifully by our partner Sebastian.

Guesthouse.

The land recovers quickly from contruction projects. Within 6 months our guesthouse went from a bare construction site to a beautifully landscaped house.

This is how the farm looked when we bought it.
2001

The next year the land was over run by weeds and vines. We needed to clean out the bad vegetation so that wild seedlings could become established and let the older trees fill out.
2002

Atfer cleaning the weeds out the land looked bare. All the seedlings are difficult to see, but now have a chance to grow.
2003

The weeds and vines now gone and most of the trees are taller than us. Now with the trees producing shade, the weeds are easy to control. Our farm is taking shape.
2004

Our farm is now established. The path through this area has a canopy to shade it and it is looking more like forest every day.
