Gracias/Celaque Natl Park - Info Page |
HIGHLIGHTS: Hiking in Celaque National Park Soaking in Hotsprings in Gracias INFO: Gracias is a small town in the northwestern area of Honduras. The town itself doesn't offer much for tourists, but is a quiet, friendly place to stay to arrange entrance into Celaque National Park. PLACES TO STAY: Hotel Erick: This place is cheap, clean, and friendly. Rooms are located behind a small store. You can arrange a ride to Celaque with the owner but make sure to compare price through Guancascos. Guancascos Hotel & Restaurant: They have moved since last Lonely Planet guide. Now located on the same hill as Castillo San Cristobal (at bottom of hill). View is great, rooms look very nice but are expensive. RESTAURANTS: Guancascos: If you're looking for "gringo" food (granola, spaghetti, etc) this is the only place in Gracias. It is a bit expensive, but good. Local Food: There are plenty of local restuarants serving local foods at good prices. BARS: None: SPANISH SCHOOLS: None: INTERNET: Nonexistent when we were here (1999). SPECIAL NOTES: Celaque National Park: Guancascos is a great source of information. The entrance to Celaque National Park is 7 km outside Gracias and then it's a good hike from the entrance to the hut where you can stay before beginning your hike. La Montana de Celaque (the highest peak in Honduras) is 2827 meters, and most people take more than 1 day to go up and return. If you don't feel like hiking all the way up the mountain, you can do a nice day hike on the trail. A ride in the back of a truck can be arranged through Guancascos or Hotel Erick - compare prices and make sure you arrange your return trip as well. You can walk as well. We tried hitchhiking and got nowhere. There is a lady who lives in the park who cooks meals for people...you can arrange meals when you arrive. Bring candles as there is no electricity. You can rent tents and sleeping bags at Guancascos, but they are in short supply and often are being used. Balneario Aguas Termales: These hotsprings are really nice and not too expensive. A wonderful place to visit after a long hike. They are over 6 km out of town (on the weekend you can hitch hike, otherwise you can hire a pickup or enjoy a nice hike. |
