Arrecifes |
Arrecifes is the main tourist center in Tayrona Park. Right on the beach, there are lots of affordable lodging options (restaurants as well) and most people stay here. |
Arrecifes beach |
The hike to Arrecifes from the park entrance in El Zaino is easy and passes through beautiful rainforest. It's a great opportunity for spotting animals (especially on the paved section from El Zaino to Caņavarel). We saw all kinds of birds, some monkeys, squirrels and a huge iguana up in a tree. |

The bay in Arrecifes is beautiful but unfortunately the ocean currents here are very dangerous and swimming is not allowed. You can easily hike to surrounding bays (Arenillas, Las Piscinas Naturales - where you may be able to find lodging in the white house, and Cabo San Juan are a few) where swimming is possible, but only close to the shore. |
There are easy trails over the points... |
...which connect the various coves and beaches. |
GETTING THERE: You can reach Arrecifes from the main park entrance at El Zaino (1 hr 45 min walking - longer if you are animal watching). It is possible to take a taxi from El Zaino to Caņavarel and then hike from there (50 min) this is the best area for viewing animals. You can also hike to Arrecifes via the entrance to El Pueblito (4 hours). See the Tayrona Hiking Page for more info. ACCOMODATION: There are 4 places offering loding. El Paraiso is supposed to be the cheapest, check at Hotel Miramar in Santa Marta for current prices. Hammocks ($2.50-$3.00) / Dorms ($4.50 - $5.00) / Camping. NOTE: You may be able to stay at Playa Brava (located to the west). It is reached by the trail from the highway to El Pueblito. Check in Santa Marta for info (try Hotel Miramar). |
