Copan

Copan is not mindblowing in size like Tikal, but renowned for the level of artistry in it's carvings.

There is also a really beautiful museum into which they are moving original carvings, replacing them with replicas outside in the ruins.

A beautiful altar in the plaza.

It is also unique in that usually the Mayans destroyed a temple before building over it, but here they left some of them in tact. You can visit the tunnels achaeoligists have dug underneath temples in order to study the structures which are underneath.

Stairway of Inscriptions: each block is inscribed forming the history of Copan and it's rulers.

Inside one of the tunnels. You can see the old temple wall on the right and the "filler" they used on the left.
The town of Copan is a nice place to stay (it's cheap and fairly relaxed).
