Copan Ruinas - Info Page

HIGHLIGHTS:
Mayan Ruins of Copan

INFO:
Copan is a nice, small town set in a pretty valley close to the Guatemala/Honduras border. The ruins are within walking distance from the town. There are cheap places to stay and good restaurants & bars.

PLACES TO STAY:
Hotel Posada Honduras: This place is cheap and clean (they clean the shared showers and bathrooms every day). The rooms are small and only have beds and a small table. There are a few rooms with private bath. There are tables and chairs under a thatched roof in the courtyard, and a place to do laundry.
Los Gemelos: Stayed here one night. It was more expensive than and not as clean as Posada Honduras.

RESTAURANTS:
***Touristy restaurants (Tunkul, Vamos a Ver) charge extra tax that other restaurants don't***
Great Local Food (forgot name): Cheap and has the best Baleadas in Honduras as well as other local food. From church in Central Park head north - on Northeast corner of 2nd cross street. Looks like a hut. (On Lonely Planet map is across from Hotelito Yaxpac - #3)
Pizza Rica: Good pizza and a really sweet family. (1 block south of Llama del Bosque. From park - 1 block south, 1 1/2 blocks west. On south side of road)
Llama del Bosque: Huge breakfasts for a good price.
Carnitas Nia Lola: Nice atmosphere, nice people, good food & great happy hour.

BARS:
Carnitas Nia Lola: Great happy hour & lots of fun.

SPANISH SCHOOLS:
Ixbalanque: We studied here for a week. Had good teachers but it was much more expensive than in Guatemala. We were the only 2 students (thus the high price) and there were no activities.

INTERNET:
Nonexistent when we were here (1999) but owner of Pizza Rica was trying to get something set up.

SPECIAL NOTES:
Ruins: Easy to walk to from town. Your entry ticket is good for at least 2 days and includes entry into Las Sepulturas and you can reenter Copan ruins during the valid time period.
Costs:
Entry to Ruins - \$10.00 U.S.(without guide)
Entry to Museum - \$5.00 U.S. (The museum is really nice)
Entry to 2 Tunnels - \$12.00 U.S. (1/2 hour tour. Really interesting but not worth $12.00. You might be able to find a guard inside the ruins that will take you for less if no one else is around - early in the morning)
El Rubi Waterfall: A bit of a tough hike but really beautiful (info from friends who loved it).
Aguas Calientes: A hassle to get to and only tepid water in the pools - don't waste your time & money.
