Laos

Of the countries we visited this year, we left the least amount of time for Laos and it was one of our favorites. We had to rush through, always wishing we had more time. Life moves along at a slow pace here and sometimes you feel you've stepped back in time. People are friendly, food is good, and travel is usually with the locals.

Strong presence of buddhism

The capital of Vientiane is so low key - there are no highrises and not much traffic or horns blowing (quite a nice change from the chaos of Vietnam). In Laos Buddhism is very strong and you will see buddhist monks and beautiful wats everywhere.

Gorgeous buddhist wats.

Though Laos remains relatively undeveloped, plenty of tourist infrastructure exists and travel is pretty straightforward.

We only had time to visit Vientiane & Louang Phabang as we headed for Thailand. We drove through Vang Viang - the scenery was gorgeous.
