Louang Phabang |
Once the capital of Laos, Louang Prubang is a peaceful little town with two rivers flowing around the old city. Much of the old quarter is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are beautiful wats and misty mornings with monks filing silently through the streets with their alms bowls to receive food from the towns people. Louang Prubang has a tradition of great food and is a wonderful place to relax at cafes set up along the Mekong. |
The Mekong |
Nam Khan River |
We travelled up the Mekong River to return to Thailand... | During the dry season, when the rivers are low, farmers move their crops down to the waters edge. |
Besides just soaking up Lao culture, there are beautiful water falls and interesting sites to visit nearby as well as reasonably priced displays of traditional dance and music. The Dala market has traditional cloth for good prices. Travelling to and from Thailand by boat along the Mekong has become very popular. The trip passes through beautiful scenery along the riverbanks. Boats (2 day slow boats or 6 hour speed boats)go back and forth daily between Louang Prabang and the border town of Houayxai. |
