Monterico - Turtle Races

Monterico has a Reserve which is trying to protect the surrounding estuaries as well as the breeding cycle of some of the animals...especially the sea turtles which lay their eggs on the beach.

Reserve Entrance (next door to Hotel El Mangle)

People from the reserve collect the turtle eggs from the beach and protect them until they hatch. Then every Saturday evening (Dec - Jan) the babies are released in a turtle race. You can buy a turtle for a small price (which helps out the reserve) and if your turtle wins you get a free dinner at a local restaurant.

Giving the babies a pep talk.

It was amazing to see how much work it was for them to cross the sand.

Every baby made it successfully to the water.

This was definitely not how nature planned things, but we did enjoy watching the turtles and are glad that they will continue to survive.
