Leon

Leon was the original capital of Nicaragua during colonial times and has long been the seat of radicals and intellectuals in the country. There are not a lot of tourist facilities, but plenty of history & architecture to enjoy.

Church of La Recoleccion
(18th Century)

The main cathedral is the largest in Central America. Construction was begun in 1747 and lasted over 100 years.

Seems every time you turn a corner here there is another colonial church or building to see.

Iglesia San Juan
(1625-1650)
Leon is quite a large town, but doesn't feel that way at all. People are friendly & the pace of life is relaxed.

From here you can easily visit the beach at Poneloya/Las Penitas as a day trip or for longer.
