Poneloya/Las Peņitas

This is a beautiful beach that goes for miles and is empty except on Holidays. The northern half is called Poneloya, the southern half is Las Peņitas. Only 20 - 30 minutes by bus from Leon, it's easily accessible. Lining the beach are vacation homes of wealthy Nicaraguans. We spent a few days in Las Peņitas for New Years.

A small portion of the beach.

The beach was very crowded on New Years day.

The rest of the time it was very quite.

We stayed at a hotel right on the beach called Barca de Oro. Nice rooms with private bath were $5.00/person. The hotel has a restaurant, bar, digital TV, canoes and other equipment.

There are also a number of cheap Restaurants/Bars located on the road in front of the hotel.

This is hotel Barco de Oro were we stayed.

The hotel was nice and comfortable. The biggest problem was that the hotel staff had decided to take New Years weekend off, so we had to fend for our own food.

Eileen and John (the owner). We spent most of our free time trying to make T-shirts for John. John was an interesting fellow who had more toys than he knew how to work.

There is a Natural Reserve Area located next to the hotel which you can explore. For more info click here .

To get here: take a bus from El Mercadito in Leon. At the beach the bus will first drive to the northern end of Poneloya (stay on it), then turn around and drive to the southern end of Las Peņitas. Barca de Oro is 100 mts. from the last bus stop in Las Peņitas.
