Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is the largest and best preserved of the Angkor temples. The entire complex is 1.5 km by 1.3 km and is surrounded by a huge moat.

Angkor Wat

The sandstone blocks used to build Angkor Wat were quarried quite a distance away and floated down the Siem Reap river on rafts.

The temple was built to honor Vishnu. In enclosed hallways that surround the temple, the walls are covered with intricate carvings of Hindu Epic Tales that cover an area 800 meters long.

View from the top of temple into interior courtyard and beyond.

Angkor is unique in that it is orientated towards the West (most other temples face the East). This makes it a very popular (and crowded) place at sunset.
