The Ruins of Angkor

The ruins of Angkor consist of over 100 temples built between the 9th and 14th centuries at the height of the Khmer civilization in Cambodia. The beautiful temple ruins, spread over a huge area, are all that is left of an amazing empire. All of the houses, public buildings and palaces which were constructed of wood decayed long ago.

Angkor Wat.

Many of the temples have incredible carvings of historical or religious stories covering their walls. The surrounding jungle has continued to wreck havoc as tree roots grow through temple walls making it impossible to remove the tree without destroying the temple. Restoration work was completely stopped during the rule of the Khmer Rouge, and the jungle grew back again. But much of Angkor has survived and as the politics of Cambodia have stabilized restoration has begun again. Angkor was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

We spent 3 days exploring these beautiful ruins. We have broken our visit down into various areas of the ruins:

Angkor Wat
Angkor Thom
Other Central Area Temples
Outside Temples
