We were able to get a group together and rent a minivan to explore some of the ruins outside the central Angkor area. Banteay Srei is located 16 km north of the main Angkor area (and easy to visit on the way to Kobal Spien - see below). Though the complex is quite small it is one of the most beautiful temples we visited. It was built in the late 10th century and is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. |

We were also able to visit the River of a Thousand Lingas (Kobal Spien). Located 23 km north of the main Angkor area it's a beautiful spot that you reach on a short hike. The trail leads up a hill into nice forested area and then meets up with the river at a really nice waterfall. The rocks along the river as well as in the river bed have carvings. It's a nice break from temples and though there were other tourists there, it was a really peaceful spot. |

You can combine a visit to these outlying spots with visits to temples on the eastern portion of the main Angkor area. We combined it with a visit to the Rolous Group. The minivan cost \\$40.00 (less if you stick only to the north east and don't include the Rolous Group). We shared it with 8 people so it was only $5.00 each for the day. |
