Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom was a 10 sq km fortified city and one of our favorite sites.

The Bayon has 54 gothic towers decorated with over 200 serenely smiling faces that look down on you from every direction as you explore the temple. The walls are covered with amazing carvings of daily life and historical battles. Bayon is located in the very center of Angkor Thom - it's function is still a mystery.

Bayon Faces.

The smiling faces were not reserved only for Bayon, but also decorate all 5 of the huge city entrance gates.

Fronting the Royal Enclosure is the 350 m long Elephant Terrace which was used as a viewing stand for public ceremonies. It is decorated with carvings of (what else?)elephants. Across the way is a group of 5 12th century temples (Preah Pithu Group). One in the back has carvings of buddhas covering the inside walls of it's central tower.

There's a lot more to see in this area, but these are a few of the highlights.
