Cartagena |
Cartagena is located on the carribean coast of Colombia. |
Looking at Old Town from the beach. |
During spanish colonial times it was the main port for shipping treasures back to Spain and was raided numerous times by pirates, so the Spanish built huge fortress walls all around the city with other forts placed strategically outside the city. As a result Cartegena was able to fend off future attacks. The walled city is now referred to as the old town. |

This clock tower is an entrance into the old town. |
The city has continued to grow, but the old town retains it's beautiful architecture and colonial feel. |
The cathedrals here are beautiful and their walls are massive...they fit right into the fort atmosphere. |
Streets are a step back in time, often with balconies full of flowers hanging overhead. |
Though the beaches here aren't spectacular (especially by carribean standards) they are fine and a nice place to relax for the day. |
