Volcan Totumo

Volcan Totumo is a mud volcano located somewhat near to Cartagena and makes an interesting day trip from the city. The volcano erupts mud rather than lava and a soak in the mud is one of the most unique travel experiences we've ever had.

It is the largest mud volcano in Colombia - yes, they have more than one!

Though it doesn't look too pretty, a soak in the mud really feels pretty good and is supposed to be great for your skin. The mud supports you and so you are suspended in it - a great feeling.

Once in the mud you are given a massage and then are free to keep "floating" as long as you wish. When you're ready to leave you head to the lake nearby and some ladies are waiting to wash all the mud away...it's quite a spa treatment and only costs \\$3.00 for everything!

You can visit the volcano by public transport and walking (it will be cheaper but take all day) or on tours from Cartagena (more expensive but you also visit other places later in the day).
