Taganga

Taganga is a small fishing village just outside Santa Marta. The pace of life here is slow and relaxed. It is also the cheapest place to go for diving certification in South America.

Taganga Waterfront

Taganga has a small beach or you can visit Playa Grande and there is good snorkelling at La Rosita (both within walking distance - see below).

Taganga Info

GETTING THERE: Take a Buseta from beachfront in Santa Marta marked Taganga on the sign (\\$0.30 or 600 pesos - 15 minutes).

HOTELS:
Villa Altamar: Private rooms (\\$5.00 per person), Dorm ($2.50 per person). A very nice, friendly place with quiet, family atmosphere. Located up the hill from Taganga it is quiet when all the downtown discos are booming on the weekend. Run by Christian (Swiss) and Miriam (Cali, Columbia). Christian offers diving courses through one of the local diving schools with free room. His wife Miriam loves to cook and will welcome you into her home as one of the family. You can also contact them at their clothing store in Santa Marta ("Vende Ropa Americana" on Calle 16 between Carr. 2 & 3)
Hospedaje Felipe: Met someone who stayed here and liked it. Might be a good option to check into.

RESTAURANTS:
There are lots of restaurants along the water front. Those on the east side of the bay are supposed to be cheaper.

DIVING:
Taganga is a cheap place to do diving courses. Lots of shops here have offices in Santa Marta near hotel Titanic and Casa Familiar.

BEACH: The nicest beach is at Playa Grande (a 20 minute walk over the point on the east side of the bay). In Taganga there is a small beach on the west side of the bay as well.

SNORKELLING: La Rosita is on the point in front of Playa Grande. Hike past Playa Grande about 20 minutes (ask fisherman along the way for directions). Great visibility, gorgeous fish, and some coral. Bring plenty of sun protection for the hike and leave your valuables in your hotel.

INFO: To stay in Bahia Gairaca contact Seņor Victor Zuniga ("El Cacique") at the Hotel Delfin in Taganga.
