Santa Marta

Santa Marta is located right on the coast. It is much more easygoing than Cartagena. Though the beach here isn't great there are lots of nice beaches nearby.

Santa Marta Beach

The city is clean, transport is a breeze and there are some really nice areas.

Beautiful park/walking area on waterfront.

Cathedral-the oldest in South America.

Rodadero

From Santa Marta you can visit the beach resort area of Rodadero. It's full of tourists, most of whom are Columbians.

Rodadero Beach.

Beach Walk

Lodging in Santa Marta is cheaper than in Cartagena. We stayed in a wonderful hotel called Residencias Titanic.

Hotel Courtyard

Santa Marta is a great base for visiting the surrounding area:
Carpe Diem
Taganga
Tayrona Park
La Ciudad Perdida Ruins
and the Sierra Nevada mountains.
