Tayrona Park

Tayrona Park is divided into two sections. El Oriente (Western half) has large bays with an arid landscape and good snorkling/diving and El Occidental (Eastern half) has beautiful beaches backed by rainforest and the ruins of Pueblito.

ORIENTE- We arrived in Santa Marta eager to explore the bays of the oriente portion of Tayrona Park (for snorkling and camping) and found it nearly impossible to track down any information. After 3 days of scouring Santa Marta talking to everyone we could and after two trips to Taganga we still hadnīt gotten anywhere so we decided to wing it. Through trial and error this is what weīve found:

Taganga/La Rosita: (diving, snorkling, hotels, restaurants, beach-Playa Grande)
15min from Santa Marta
Bahia Concha: (snorkling, restaurant, camping, beach)
1hr from Santa Marta
Bahia Gairaca: (snorkling, camping, cabaņa, restaurant, beach)
50min from Santa Marta
Bahia Neguange: (snorkling, camping, food venders, beach)
1hr 10min from Gairaca walking

*Snorkling: Equipment is available to rent at Bahia Concha (definitely on weekends) and Playa del Muerto (everyday). For other locations youīll need to bring it with you. You should be able to rent gear in Santa Marta, Taganga, or Rodadero.
OCCIDENTAL- This is the portion of the park most people visit. Information is readily available for this area. Check our info link at the bottom of this page for people to contact:

Arrecifes: (restaurants, camping, cabanas, hiking, beaches)
1hr 40min from enterance
Arenillas: (swimming, camping, beach)
10min from Arrecifes
Piscinas Natural: (swimming, restaurant, guest house, camping, beach)
10min from Arenillas
Cabo San Juan: (swimming, hiking, restaurant, beach)
30min from Piscinas
Cabo to Pueblito hike: (1hr 15min hiking)
Pueblito: (ruins, hiking, drinks-sometimes)
1hr 45min to main road

*Camping: Is possible just about anywhere on the beach if you get permission. Just ask around the area you wish to camp. Jan. thru Mar. have strong winds so camping isnīt much fun. April and May are supposed to be better.
