Bahia Concha

Bahia Concha is a beautiful bay with a long beach. The bay is wide and deep and so the water is pretty cool. There is good snorkelling, places to camp or you can just come for a day from Santa Marta.

HIGHLIGHTS:
- Beautiful beach
- Unique sea animals
- Schools of jumping fish that look like fountains of silver coins.

The best snorkelling is along the east side of the bay out to the point. Visibility is good. There are lots of fish as well as other animals, a nice dropoff, and some good coral heads.

You can camp anywhere along the beach with permission and there is an official campground that has showers, bathrooms and a restaurant.

Official camping area.

Behind the beach is a mangrove area that supports quite a bit of bird life and so you can do some birdwatching. These parrots were hanging out in our campsite in the morning.

There are groups of small fish that jump when alarmed and create beautiful fountains of silver in the sunlight. It's almost impossible to catch with film but here's our best shot.

CAMPING:
Official Camping Area: The official camping area is located on the western end of the beach where you will arrive. There is a restaurant here. Camping is \\$7.50(US) a night and includes use of toilets, freshwater showers, beach chairs, and security for your belongings.
Other: You can camp anywhere along the beach with permission (probably for free). There's a nice little site on the eastern end of the beach (where sand turns to rocks and coral). For permission talk to Felix in 2nd to last house. This is also where you snorkel. Your belongings should be OK locked in your tent and you can pay for showers/toilets at official campsite (\\$0.25 US - 500 pesos).

FOOD:
Restaurant serves large meals with fish or chicken. Sodas and beer are cheaper from beach vendors.

GETTING THERE:
- Take Buseta from road in front of Beach in Santa Marta to Bastidas (marked on sign in window - \\$0.30 -600 pesos). Ask driver to drop you where collectivos for Bahia Concha leave. Collectivo to Bahia Concha costs $0.50 - 1000 pesos.
- On Sat & Sun lots of people come here so transport is quite frequent. On weekdays there may be less. Our collective to Bahia Concha left Bastidas at 8:30 a.m. The last return collectivo is probably around 4 p.m. - ask driver in a.m. or at restaurant at beach.
- Gilbert at Welcome Restaurant and the Hotel Miramar in Santa Marta do day trips. If there's a group going it might not be too expensive.
