This year we chose to stay in Antigua our first night in Guatemala rather than the capital city. Not only is Antigua much smaller and quieter, but there's great food available in some of the local restaurants and good hotels to stay in. Both taxis and a tourist shuttle will take you straight to Antigua from the airport when you arrive, and since it is only a 45 minute drive it's a great place to stay.
