The City: We are so happy to be back in Xela studying Spanish. Xela is a nice break from the "touristed" Guatemala. The majority of people who live here work in jobs not connected with tourism and few speak English. It has a Spanish Colonial history which can be seen in the architecture of various buildings scattered throughout the city - though over all it's a "modern" Central American city with smog from local buses, lots of traffic, and children who live in the streets. It is located in the heart of Mayan Quiche land and is full of Mayan people in their traditional dress. It is also surrounded by small Mayan villages and farming communities full of customs and traditions.
The School: One of the highlights of Xela are it's language schools. They give you a chance to learn Spanish in a setting where you have to use it daily. They are well run with well-educated teachers. Many are cheaper than in Antigua and include activities to various areas of interest around Xela. We returned here specifically to study at the Utatlan Language School which we studied at last year. Darrin's teacher Juan still works there and continues to be terrific guide on the various school activities.
Our Family: We stayed with for a month while we were studying spanish.
