Coffee Farm - La Finca Magdalena

La Finca Magdalena is an Organic Farming Cooperative that is run by a number of Nicaraguan families. Their largest crop is coffee beans which they export to the United States.

The Finca is located on the Eastern side of the Island which was created by Volcan Madera (1340 meters high and no longer active). If you want to climb Volcan Madera this is the place to come. The trail heads up right behind the farm house.

You can work on the farm with the families and earn your room & board OR just pay for your room & relax. We worked for a day and were given the job of sorting coffee beans (good from bad). The only problem was that we could not seem to get a clear explanation on which were bad and which were good. We must have failed miserably because at the end of the day they went through all our beans again.

Women and young girls work all day sorting out the highest grade beans to export.

This is not a luxury place by any means and facilities (beds, baths, etc) are very rustic, but the people are really wonderful and we loved it here.

Next we headed to Charco Verde
