Ometepe

Ometepe is located in Lago de Nicaragua. It is the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world and was formed by 2 volcanoes (Concepcion - still active & Madera - inactive, with a beautiful crater lake) which joined together over time.

It is a beautiful place to visit and the people who live there are so kind. It is not set up for tourism on a large scale and so has a unique unspoilt feeling, though this also means things are a little "rough around the edges".

Lago de Nicaragua is a huge freshwater lake (8th largest in the world). The lake contains the world's only freshwater sharks as well as swordfish and other ocean animals.
There are 2 theories to explain this:
1) The lake used to be a part of the ocean and was seperated from it by an upthrust of land. The sea creatures trapped in the lake gradually adjusted as the water became fresh over time.
2) The sharks and other sea fish gradually migrated up a river from the Pacific ocean and aclimatized to freshwater over the years, and now live in the lake.

Either way, it's a unique and amazing occurance.

We began our visit in Moyogalpa & Santa Domingo Beach

and then visited La Finca Magdalena

and ended in Charco Verde
