The Petroglyphs of Ometepe

Scattered all over Ometepe are stones carved into figures or carved with pictures. These petroglyphs were made by the Chorotega people long ago.

There are thousands of petroglyphs all over the island, more are discovered daily.

Some have been gathered in Altagracia in the garden in front of the church. There is also a museum in Altagracia with others, but most are found in the middle of peoples fields or at local watering holes.

A figure near Porvenir.

Many are carved with figures of animals (especially monkeys) and spirals.

Other than Altagracia, the 2 easiest places to see petroglyphs are in Porvenir and at the Finca Magdalena.
